To summarize what I said so far, I have bad DSL line quality (uncanceled echo) that's making my router flip out and randomly drop the connection. This also appears to be causing this problem with apt-get update, through there is no packet loss while the router near as I can tell, and latency seems to be OK. How many people here have DSL? If you have a router/modem thing, look in its config, however you do it with your model. Do you have uncanceled echo?
