You may be onto something here.

I do have those messages in my syslog.

I disabled wireless (hmm the switch doesn't seem to work anymore!  I
wonder how long that's been the case?  had to use ifconfig).  Then I
started rhythmbox, played two songs, with no stutter and no underrun
messages.

Then I quit rhythmbox, started wireless with ifconfig, connected to my
router, started rhythmbox again, played the same first song - and got
two stutters in the the middle.

However, I did not see any fresh noise floor messages, or any other
intervening ath5k messages.  They may be around somewhere, though.  I
find ath5k messages in syslog, some alsa messages there too, others in
messages.

Anyway, should I try something else?
