There are several problems with that patch, so I wouldn't advice it be applied:
1) It exits with code 0 in an error. 2) It prints the error message to stdout. This is bad because rst2pdf also works as a filter, stdout should be either a PDF, the expected output of a command line argument like --version, or nothing. I can fix this but I need it on rst2pdf's bug tracker, since I will not be following it here and don't have the time right now.
