This continues to be a problem in Ubuntu 10.4. Any file with unrecognized characters cannot be searched, meaningfully edited, or saved. This is unacceptable, it should at least fail gracefully and, for example, just display the hex equivalent of the non-ASCII character. Whoever screwed with nvi and broke it should at least have the decency to back out their crap.
