I'm facing the same issue in Lucid. 1) Added a repository under "Other Software" tab in settings window for update-manager. (deb http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu lucid-backports main universe multiverse restricted) 2) The window did not refresh to reflect the newly added item. 3) Tried closing and launching update-manager but no success. 4) Opened /etc/apt/sources.list and the newly added repository is present at the end of the file.
