I had a Hardy Heron disk lying around and tried it with that. It was fine. The problem is unique to the installed version.
So, although I could reinstall it, I have some files on it. Is it possible to reinstall over the current Ubuntu leaving all the files intact? Is it possible to get the files off somehow?
