I don't think the eth card is down. You can check this by running the
command
ip addr show
In the <> there should be an UP. However, you will probably have no
valid IP address, since dhcp client did not run on the eth card after
there is a physical link.
Could you please confirm, or give more information what exactly is
wrong.
