@Felipe: "ipod --list" does not work because it expects the ipod to be mounted (i.e. it checks for ipod devices with the property 'volume.is_mounted = true' in hal).

I removed libgpod-common and everything went back to normal. -- I cannot mount my ipod shuffle. It shows up with the system>administration>disk utility; but it doesn't have any mountable partitions.
