This machine is a laptop; the trouble I described was when using a wireless connection. I booted it up connected to the wired network, and the type-in field returned to the menu. Certain combinations of wired and wireless and routing seem to give problems to gwibber but I can come up with no reproducible pattern in the tests I have done so far. It is pretty confusing.
