I had this problem with every singe upgrade or clean installation I did. They were:
Vaio CR laptop (upgrade from hardy) Vaio TT laptop (upgrade from jaunty) Vaio NR laptop (upgrade from jaunty) Desktop with ATI card (64 bit, using alternate installer, clean installation) Desktop with Nvidia card (32 bit, using alternate installer, clean installation) Asus EeePC 1008HA (upgrade from jaunty) The fix proposed works every time. From my experience, therefore, out-of-the-box lucid bug is just plain ugly, with text and blinking cursors.
