I have the same problem with Jalopnik. Which appears to be running the
same site style as Lifehacker.

I can tell because the rotor (circle that rotates where the site icon lies in 
the tab) is visible when the page is perfectly viewable.
A refresh seems to resolve the problem. When loading the for the page first 
time, after 5 minutes the rotor is still there and after pressing refresh I 
wait a few seconds for the site icon to appear in the tab.
