Thanks, Phillip. Yes. I followed your suggestion to load the updates. That seemed to work real well. I did not set the boot correctly and tried to follow the directions to load grub after the fact (see Post #92). When that failed, I deleted the partions using gparted. Then I tried to reload the system without rebooting the live disk (trying to retain our ppa fix). I fear that I hosed my raid. If that's the case, I'll just try to load Ubuntu as a single boot. I'll reboot to the try it out version, reload your fixes, and then proceed from there to use the whole machine. Does this plan make sense? Thanks so much. Herb
