Thanks for responding! Yes, this bug is still an issue. I will try the latest Ubuntu development release and upstream kernels as you suggest, but I won't be able to spend time on this until about 3 weeks from now.
The problem kernels are not stable enough to run apport-collect or anything else at the shell.
