I did wait +/- 1hour before I decide to interrupt the installation.
Before that I had checked the processes but nothing was going on ... so
I did it.
Finally the upgrade from Karmic to Lucid has been completed but mysql
didn't run anymore.
I the meen time I fixed the problem with mysql. Group and Other had 
write permission on file /etc/mysql/my.cnf. I removed these rights and
mysql is now working again.
