tl;dr

i wonder what information you miss...

1, a folder structure with short filenames/foldernames and a dot on their ends
but no ms-dos "extension" (eg.: "123.", "folder.", etc. see a cyrus imap
maildir structure.) is shared via samba (see config file). the underlying file
system was ext4. the filenames showed correct on the linux server. this was
also working fine with ubuntu 8.04.
2. i expected the filenames to be the same on the mounted share when looked
from under windows 7.
3. however, these short filenames (and only these!) showed up as random
characters. i tried copying them, the names were wrong. also tried ftp, names
were correct.

i can not reproduce this anymore as i wiped 10.04 completely, and switched back
to 8.04.
bye
