You can use ceni - it is a gui acccessable in the command line or terminal.
 It is a great wrapper script that has saved me dozens of times from
formatting my hard drive when I could no longer connect or update.

http://venenux.org/repos/venenux/pool/principal/c/ceni/ceni_2.5_all.deb

It is a must on my machine.

You can connect with other commands but this ceni does it all automatically
for you independent of any other program.

It requires curses, but if you don't have the dependencies when you try to
install it will tell you.

sudo dpkg -i ceni_2.5_all.deb

at the command line will install it.
