I guess the start up command of GRUB is what he meant...
You can pass it using the live cd, too. But I do not know if it would be saved 
then.

BTW: Running from 64bit Lucid Live disc with vga=771 makes Plymouth
looking perfect... after installing and reboot it stops working that
way! When adding vga=771 to grub it stays flickering (using compiled sis
driver) I might test this with VESA again when I have time to...
