Bearing in mind comment #1, perhaps Ubuntu 9.10 and 9.04 are using your
CPU more efficiently than Ubuntu 8.10.  A good indicator of this would
be if your BOINC throughput increased, or if you still have the logs,
whether the BOINC benchmark figures increased.

Can you try with Ubuntu 10.04 "Lucid Lynx"?

I'm guessing this machine is a laptop.  A good idea when running BOINC
on a laptop is to purchase one of those laptop cooling pads and put the
laptop on it, or at the very least to put the edge of a book under the
back edge of the laptop, thus raising it off the desk and letting air
circulate underneath it.
