As far as I can tell the mozilla-openoffice.org plugin is for opening
the ODF file types or at least that is all it is registered to open at
the moment. It might be possible to extend it to open all document types
that OOo can support, but I think at least at the moment this bug can be
closed as it does not currently open .doc files.
