My wireless now works, and I am not entirely sure why. But I can tell
you the steps I took to make it work:

1) removed the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver
2) restarted the pc
3) installed b43-fwcutter via synaptic package manager (previously not
installed, or requested to be installed)
4) re-installed the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver
5) works!

I hope this may help other folks. I stumbled upon this solution by
accident. It would be great to better understand why this solution
works.

Cheers
