My wireless now works, and I am not entirely sure why. But I can tell you the steps I took to make it work:
1) removed the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver 2) restarted the pc 3) installed b43-fwcutter via synaptic package manager (previously not installed, or requested to be installed) 4) re-installed the Broadcom STA proprietary wireless driver 5) works! I hope this may help other folks. I stumbled upon this solution by accident. It would be great to better understand why this solution works.
