I come to the conclusion that you probably did not update the system before upgrading, since current version of update-manager in karmic (9.10) repository is 0.126.5 and with karmic-update repository 0.126.9 according to: http://packages.ubuntu.com/karmic-updates/update-manager This suggest that your update-manager is more at jaunty (9.04 with updates enabled).
