I have exactly the same problem here, as described by Allan.

(Config: fresh lucid amd64 install)

I added a line in my fstab to mount a portable USB hard disk (ext3) on a
specific dir when inserted:

UUID=xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx /media/neo ext3
nobootwait,optional,user,rw,suid,dev,exec,auto,async,relatime 00

As soon as disk is connected, mountall goes up 100%.

The same USB disk, mounted on a Karmic machine does not reproduce the
problem.

When removing the line from fstab, disk is mounted on
/media/xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx (uuid of disk) and mountall stays
quiet. Putting back the line, problem shows up again.

It's a bit annoying, as I want this disk always mounted on /media/neo, I
need the "nobootwait,optional" args in fstab.
