That's what I'm guessing. Can you do an ls -l and dpkg -S on /usr/bin/emacs still, please? It should be a symlink to /etc/alternatives/emacs which in turn should be a symlink to /usr/bin/emacs22 (and so on for a couple of additional redirections -- assuming you don't have other emacsen installed and alternatives set up to point to one of the others). Also, please indicate which precise version of emacs you have installed. By the by, I don't understand the reference to xemacs. Are you referring to bug #262316?
