A script had duplicated the "lo" line, and I ended up completely stuck. The syntax was fine, just a duplicate line!!
This was a KVM instance and the error messages were not helpful at all. I had to add "--verbose" to the boot prompt (not well documented), and sift trough the upstart log messages. Just not what you would expect from a server OS.
