On a Thinkpad t42p with AR5212 hardware and ath5k kernel module, I was having crashes entirely without chrome, which seems to indicate that there is something fundamentally wrong with the stock lucid ath5k module. The problem was less frequent when using only firefox (or no browser) than when using chrome/chromium (maybe libaio is exacerbating?). I tried the upstream kernel to no avail. What finally seems to have worked out for me was installing the 'linux-backports- modules-wireless' package from lucid-updates. The wifi has, at least, stabilized enough to stop randomly locking the system (even when using chrome or chromium). Turning on bookmark sync does still lock the system, so it seems like there is more than one thing amiss in this stack.
