I'm sorry, I've been very busy with work and I haven't had time to
properly participate in the discussion.

IMHO, I think there is an integration problem with Pidgin into Lucid
release, because in this release Ubuntu prioritizes the use of the
indicator applet instead of the notification area. If the package
pidgin-libnotify isn't installed that intregration will fail because
indicator-me will still show an entry for Pidgin although it's totally
useless, and this behavior would indeed confuse an average user. I
firmly believe that it's a bug. To make matters worse, the description
of pidgin-libnotify isn't clear too because it doesn't mention about its
relation with indicator-me.

I've thought in the following options:
- Make pidgin-libnotify to be recommend again by pidgin.
- Change the mechanism that indicator-me uses to detect Pidgin, so it doesn't
depend on pidgin-libnotify.
- Remove the entry in indicator-me in case of pidgin-libnotify isn't installed,
and/or:
- Change the description and/or name of pidgin-libnotify to something that
describes that it's required by indicator-me in order to detect Pidgin.

Cheers!
