I had the opportunity to run the current ubuntu version of empathy (2.30.1−0ubuntu1) again. The probability of a proper logoff is much higher if the connection persists for more than just a few seconds (20 seconds seem to be sufficient), but otherwise empathy still failes to logoff correctly.
