While the above work-around sort of works, one also looses the ability to set volume and have a presence on multiple windows that come with the with the Status Icon plugin.
I believe the non-standard behavior still rates as a bug. Further, nothing in the documentation describes the non-standard behavior. -- when I click the 'X' in the upper right corner, Rhythmbox doesn't quit but hides up on the panel. How annoying. I like Ubuntu b/c applications do what I tell them, not what they think they want me to tell them. If I click 'X' I want it to quit.
