Mizanur, I figured out what happened to my installation - sort of. I played around a lot with the programs installed and did much of it manually. I feel that I removed or changed some important installed program. To fix it, I reinstalled the OS and then used the "Synaptic Package Manager" (SPM) to load the program (Eclipse) that I wanted.
The SPM, I figured out, is an alternative to the Ubuntu Software Center and seems more mature. It contains all of the dependencies necessary when you load a particular piece of software, so you achieve better results and do not end up with vague error messages. One last thing I would recommend - use the VMWare player to host your Ubuntu session while learning. (It's free from vmware.com) You can create an image at a certain point and then reload it if something goes wrong - nothing much lost and time saved. Good luck!
