i did replace with directory and it didn't work. I was downloading eclipse
(from main eclipse website) when I went and came again after 20 minutes, the
screen was blank. I restarted the PC. Everything looked fine till I launched
update manager and the problem became evident.

I live in Chennai, India where power cuts are have become common. My
computer had cold shutdown many times and once I had to manually recover
using fsck because disk check failed. This could have contributed to to the
flaw.
