I'm a long-time proponent of Ubuntu BUT in 10.04 ISO install disk,
someone forgot to fix the GRUB install. I wouldn't have minded if the
Lucid Install ISO CD download page has said that the install CD will not
work with a previously set-up dual-boot WinXP+Ubuntu system... but just
tell people it won't work. Instead the Install CD ties to do such re-
install on top of an earlier dual-boot version (XP w Ubuntu 9.X), but it
leaves the PC unable to boot any OS, which is a super-frustrating
outcome!

The problem is an issue with Grub v1 and v2 getting confused with which
is the Master Boot Record and/or leaving too much Grub v1 around. The
only workaround is low-level command line firing of various Grub update
utilities, trying to manually complete a full install of Grub v2. If the
Install finds Grub v1, then the install should NOT half-install Grub v2.
The only easy recovery is to download the SuperGrubDisk (and use it in
your CD drive to boot). And doing so reminds me of going back to the old
days of having a floppy disk boot.

I suspect that this failure in the grub install routine is related to
the half-install-then-fail bug reported above. Either way, the Install
Team ought get right on it.
