With dell studio 1555 and the standard repo 64-bit kernel i found latest version of the ati driver released these days (10.5) solves the problem. Download it from the official ati/amd website and try if that works. Changelog of ati driver also states: "Resuming from sleep no longer causes the display number overlay to become corrupted"
