I encountered this error when updating from home where I don't have a proxy server. At some point after the files were downloaded and the update began, I received the error message. The next day when I was in the office where I do have a proxy server, I updated another application and the kernal update completed successfully. I'm not sure why, but I sometimes have conflicting proxy details set even though I've checked the network and apt-get proxy are set correctly.
Since the update completed, this defect report can be close.
