Hi guys, I'm just getting around to dealing with this now.
I have updated to 10.04, and the problem has not gone away. In fact, it's gotten worse. In addition to seeing the black screen w/colored lines phenomenon when waking the machine up from hibernate or suspend, the same problem occurs whenever I open any application that changes the screen resolution, ie a game. In the past few days, the problem has metastasized. Now the black screen w/colored appears every time I turn on or reboot the computer, right around the moment the purple background with the Ubuntu loading screen appears. One way to fix this problem is to close the lid when it's reached the log-in screen (I can tell when it's done that because of the bongo drum sound), open it back up and bring it out of hibernate. However, then the pointer disappears, and I have to use the Ctrl button to locate where it should be in order to use the mouse. This usually lasts about five minutes, then the pointer reappears. As it is, this is not an acceptable fix. I don't know what an upstream kernel is. I lack the vocabulary to even understand the two explanations of what an upstream kernel is. All I know is that this problem must be fixed. I really don't want to go back to using Microsoft, but I don't know how much more of this I can take. -Sam -Sam.
