Second question first. I don't think it has anything to do with Gnome. This
was the first place I found where bugs are reported in Linux. There was a
quick brush-off reply but they didn't have the courtesy to direct me to the
appropriate site to report this bug.

My alsamixer has hit a new record of 2 weeks without turning off using
this possible fix from a fellow on an automotive chat group who knows
Linus Torvalds:

Edit the file:

/etc/pulse/default.pa

Search for the line:
load-module module-hal-detect
or
load-module module-udev-detect
Change to:
load-module module-hal-detect tsched=0
or
load-module module-udev-detect tsched=0
Good Luck
