OK I have had a chance to do some light testing. This issue seems to occur when pulseaudio needs to do resampling and revolves around some resampling methods using too much CPU time.
On my 1Ghz EeePC 900, sampling methods that fail are: copy speex-float-[1-9] speex-float-10 speex-fixed-* src-sinc-* auto Methods that work are: src-zero-order-hold src-linear trivial speex-float-1 ffmpeg peaks Steps to reproduce the problem: (You will need gstreamer-ugly) 1. Download http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/A-codecs/AC3/Canyon-5.1-48khz-448kbit.ac3 2. Run gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location=Broadway-5.1-48khz-448kbit.ac3 ! decodebin ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! pulsesink Expected result: To hear sound out of the speakers. Actual result: No sound, pulseaudio quits/is killed. How reproducible is the problem? It is reproducible every time. Additional information: Running gst-launch-0.10 filesrc location=Broadway-5.1-48khz-448kbit.ac3 ! decodebin ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! audio/x-raw-int, rate=44100 ! pulsesink doesn't produce a problem. You can almost certainly reproduce the problem with a plain WAV like http://samples.mplayerhq.hu/A-codecs/wavpcm/8_Channel_ID.wav too. The key seems to be multichannel sound that also needs to resampled. It should be noted that I also see a similar failure on an 2Ghz Intel Core 2 laptop. -- pa_stream_writable_size() failed: Connection terminated errors not caught by apport https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/532586 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Bugs, which is subscribed to Ubuntu. -- ubuntu-bugs mailing list ubuntu-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/ubuntu-bugs
