In my case, with compiz enabled, the pointer theme changes only partially, creating a weird "pointer theme Frankenstein". The new theme is only notable when hovering over the "Minimise, Maximise, Close window" buttons. And it stays the same after a restart. I can apply the new theme only by clicking & changing & restarting 100 times then finally something happens.
