I have the same problem with an HP Pavilion DV2555ea, Ubuntu 10.04, Linux ubuntu 2.6.32-22-generic-pae (but also without pae). Using showkey and pressing Fn+F7 or Fn+F8 it doesn't show any scancode. Same Fn keys without showkey have no effect on panel backlight.
