I can call this "bug" closed--I re-downloaded & installed the current kernel from the us archive & everything seems to work fine. I can only guess as to the cause of the prior bad install. This time I used Synaptic & watched the install, the first time I let Update-Manager do the update without supervision. Could Update-Manager not have checked the file before installing?
