Thank you for your response.  I thought that my experience might help solve a 
problem that was similar to others but enough different to be unique.  I have 
since changed to the 32 bit mode and have had no problems. I think one of the 
biggest problems with version 64 was because of a driver that it kept trying to 
install that was not available for 64 mode.  It was an outside driver but I 
can't remember if it was for java or flash.  At an rate it would hang up the 
update manager every time it tried to update.  I'm running  10.04 now on two 
computers, both Intel core 2 duo, one on a laptop and the other a desktop.  My 
stop button has vanished a few times but that problem seems to have gone away 
with the updates.   I truly think this is the best system I've ever used, and 
if there is anything I can do to help test let me know.  Thank you for all you 
do.
