I successfully hibernated after following the nomodeset recommendation for GRUB2 found at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/LucidLynx/ReleaseNotes It mentions changing a line from /etc/default/grub to: GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="nomodeset" I saved the file, ran sudo update-grub, then I was able to hibernate successfully.
