Public bug reported:

I upgraded from 9.10 to 10.04 last week, everything worked fine until
now. I started up the machine (did a correct shutdown yesterday) and now
I can't login to gnome. the only thing I found in the logs that looks
like it could have something to do with that is:

gdm-session-worker[2427]: WARNING: Unable to load file '/etc/gdm/custom.conf':
No such file or directory
gdm-simple-greeter[2424]: Gtk-WARNING:
/build/buildd/gtk+2.0-2.20.1/gtk/gtkwidget.c:5636: widget not within a GtkWindow
gdm-session-worker[2427]: GLib-GObject-CRITICAL: g_value_get_boolean: assertion
`G_VALUE_HOLDS_BOOLEAN (value)' failed
gnome-session[2457]: WARNING: Could not launch application
'gnome-volume-manager.desktop': Unable to start application: Failed to execute
child process "/usr/lib/gnome-volume-manager/gnome-volume-manager" (No such
file or directory)
gdm-binary[2012]: WARNING: Error activating session for user JR: Unable to
activate session

I have another user on that machine, login to that user does work, but that
doesn't help me!
