I experience the same problem. Things work fine on my Intrepid machine with Ghostscript 8.63. Now I get the same problems mentioned above using Karmic's dvipdf (which uses ghostscript 8.70). Also note that alternative dvi to pdf converters, namely dvipdfm, dvipdfmx, dvipdft all get funny results. The results vary among the converters, but for figures they are never right.
