I'm having a very similar problem with Empathy on Lucid right now. Realized that a long message sent by others to me, appear in the preview upper-right-side translucid popup, but wont show on the chat window at all. It is not recognized as an error by the debug tool. Instead it leads me to the log of the chat, where the message appears correctly. One thing to note is, there is a pattern for msgs that does not appear or seems to have been received: They are the ones with a breakline between the start and the end of the tag message.
