Finally got there, thanks to your advice. Now have the newer Ubuntu desktop, etc. and it seems more stable. Firefox wakes up at once, the windows have stopped disappearing down a black hole at the bottom of the screen - and now minimise properly. I am most grateful to you, Leo. Cheers, Piers.
