yes - that fixed the issue.  However I doubt newbies will be aware of
the workaround nor how to invoke it automatically on boot.  Can this fix
be somehow incorporated in the kernel?

I've also got another rt2500pci pcmcia card - however the new kernel
still doesn't resolve the kernel crash I have with all lucid and
upstream kernels...
