Binary package hint: evince
When I upgraded my desktop system to 10.04 LTS I discovered that when I
view PDFs using evince in Dual Page mode (i.e., two whole pages shown
side by side, so quite small font sizes), the text was slightly blurry.
I eventually found that antialiasing control is in the Appearance
control panel item, under Fonts. I have Subpixel smoothing (LCDs)
checked, and in the Details I have set the resolution to 96dpi which is
correct for my LCD monitor (& laptop), Subpixel (LCDs) smoothing is
checked and Slight hinting is checked. I got a slight improvement by
changing the Subpixel order from RGB to VBGR.
[Aside: when I upgraded my laptop which has a smaller screen (1280x800
rather than 1400x1050), I did not notice any problems, but I think
that's because the smaller screen never showed things quite as well in
the first place.]
