Same here, Dell Inspiron 15, Trying to attach Rock Band microphone. There are workarounds in Audacity and the computer recognizes it, but there is no means of seeing it in the Sound Preferences. I like the Sound Preferences having the microphone because I don't have to use all of these workarounds and also because I can increase and decrease the input volume (can't in Audacity).
