This does not seem to be a mysql bug:
The update fails:
reproduce:
exit aptitude, then:
Vorbereiten zum Ersetzen von mysql-server-5.1 5.1.41-3ubuntu12.1 (durch
.../mysql-server-5.1_5.1.41-3ubuntu12.3_amd64.deb)
the update process hangs forever. There is no input window somewhere, nothing
to answer, nothing. (no frontend)

There is a MySQL server running, but we failed in our attempts to stop it.
Stop it yourself and try again!
