Another cycle, same behaviour.

Uptime 3 days 12 hours, and I've seen the strange monochrome windows
again. Memory use at 83% after Evolution (which I'm now starting to
use) grew to 1.3GB resident. After terminating Evolution, back down to
61% memory use (3.6GB) for programs totalling less than 1.3GB which
works out to memory vanishing at a rate 650MB/24 hour day.

After closing Eclipse:

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 6128312 4521160 1607152 0 118360 824536
-/+ buffers/cache: 3578264 2550048
Swap: 11719376 41960 11677416

One post from last year with a similar complaint on a VM CentOS server.

http://serverfault.com/questions/69309/finding-memory-leak-on-linux

Based on this post, I've attached the output of /proc/vmstat, though it
doesn't yet mean much to me.

Strangely, I do have hdf5 installed (mentioned as a possible suspect in
the thread above) but I don't see how it could be running.

Just discovered I have a tomcat6 instance running (also mentioned) which
isn't using much visible memory. This was a byproduct of wanting to
play around with the Lucene solr-tomcat document search engine, which
could have been activated around the time this memory leak started.
Didn't do much with it.

solr-tomcat and tomcat6 removed. And now for another reboot.
